It is narrated from Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said: One day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting in my house, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Let no one come in to me." I kept waiting, and meanwhile Sayyiduna Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) came in. Then I heard the sobbing of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) as he wept. I peeped in and saw that Sayyiduna Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) was in his (peace and blessings be upon him) lap, or at his side, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) was passing his hand over his head and weeping. I said: By Allah, I did not even know when he came in. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Jibril (the trustworthy) was in the house, and he asked: 'Do you love him?' I said: 'As far as this world is concerned, yes.' He said: 'Your Ummah will kill him in a land that is called Karbala.'" Then Jibril took some of its soil and showed it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then, when Sayyiduna Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) was surrounded at the time he was martyred, he asked: What is the name of this land? The people said: Karbala. So he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) spoke the truth; this is a land of distress (karb) and affliction (bala').
