Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Hafsah became a widow after the death of Khunays bin Hudhafah al-Sahmi (may Allah be pleased with him); he was a Companion of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and had taken part in Badr, then he died in Madinah. I met Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and offered her (in marriage) to him, but he remained silent, and I was deeply grieved by that. Then, when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) married her, I asked him: What led you to act in that way? He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had mentioned her, and that is why I remained silent. (These are the words of the narration of Musa bin Uqbah and Ibn Abi Atiq.)
