The narrator said: I went to Abdullah bin Iyas bin Abi Fatimah al-Damri, and he narrated to me through his father from his grandfather, Sayyiduna Abu Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I was sitting with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned towards us and said: "Who would like to wake up in the morning and not fall ill?" We hastened forward and said: We would, O Messenger of Allah. He said: We recognised the displeasure in his (peace and blessings be upon him) face. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Would you like to be like the aggressive (unruly) donkeys?" They said: No, O Messenger of Allah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Would you not like to be people of trials and people of expiations? By the One in whose hand is the soul of Abu al-Qasim, Allah Almighty tests the believer with trials, and He tests him with them only because of his honour with Him. Allah Almighty has appointed for him a rank that he cannot reach through any of his deeds, so He tests him with as much trial as will bring him to that degree."
