Abu Umayyah al-Sha'bani (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I came to Sayyiduna Abu Tha'labah al-Khushani (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: O Abu Tha'labah, what do you do regarding this verse? He said: Which verse? I said: The saying of Allah Almighty: "O you who believe, take care of your own selves; whoever goes astray cannot harm you when you are guided" [Surah al-Ma'idah: 105]. He said: By Allah, you have asked about it of someone well informed; I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) this very question, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Rather, enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong; then, when you see greed being obeyed, desires being followed, this world being preferred, and everyone with an opinion delighted with his own opinion, then take care of your own self in particular and leave aside the affairs of the common people. For after you there are days of patience, in which the one who is patient will be like one who holds a burning coal in his hand; the one who does good deeds in that time will have the reward of fifty men." (The narrator said:) Someone other than Utbah bin Abi Hakim gave me this addition: It was said: O Messenger of Allah, the reward of fifty men from among us or from among them? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No, rather the reward of fifty men from among you."
