Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 18682 — We used to say: There is no repentance

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: We used to say: There is no repentance for one who falls into trial and abandons his religion after his Islam and his recognition (of the truth). So Allah Almighty revealed concerning them this verse: "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Most Merciful," up to His saying: "before the punishment comes upon you suddenly while you do not perceive." [Al-Zumar: 53-55] So I wrote it with my own hand, then sent it to Sayyiduna Hisham bin al-As bin Wa'il (may Allah be pleased with him). Hisham said: When it (the letter) reached me, I took it up and began reading it aloud, but I could not understand what I was saying. Then it was put into my heart that it had been revealed about us and about what we used to say. So I mounted my camel and joined (them) in Madinah. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was staying, waiting for permission to be given to him and to his Companions from the Muhajirun to emigrate, and they were arriving group after group. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) stayed with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), waiting for permission to set out on the emigration. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) had asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for permission to emigrate, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not hasten; perhaps Allah will appoint a companion for you." So Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) hoped that by this companion the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) meant himself (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) had prepared two riding camels for this, which he used to feed at his house.
