Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 18630 — Isma'il bin Ayyub bin Salamah bin

Isma'il bin Ayyub bin Salamah bin Abdullah bin al-Walid bin al-Mughirah bin Abdullah bin Umar bin Makhzum (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated that Sayyiduna al-Walid bin al-Walid was held captive in Makkah. When he intended to emigrate, he sold a piece of land of his called al-Mana for a she-camel in Ta'if, and he recited a verse: "O child of an emigrant! Sell the bundle of knowledge, then buy with it a rope and a she-camel, then hurl yourself at them with a yearning soul." Then he found the people unmindful of him, so he, Ayyash bin Abi Rabi'ah bin al-Mughirah and Salamah bin Hisham set out on foot, fearing pursuit. They ran until they became exhausted, and al-Walid fell behind, so he recited: "O my two feet! Bring me up with the people; do not promise me sluggishness after today." When he reached Harrat al-Adras, he stumbled and said: "You are nothing but a finger that has bled, and what you have met is in the path of Allah." Then he came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in Madinah and said: O Messenger of Allah! I am exhausted and I am dying, so shroud me in your shirt and place it against my skin. So he passed away, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) shrouded him in his shirt. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) went to Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), in front of whom there was a child, and she was reciting an elegy: "Weep for al-Walid bin al-Walid, Abu al-Walid bin al-Mughirah! Indeed al-Walid bin al-Walid, Abu al-Walid, was sufficient for his clan. He was rain in the years of drought, an overflowing stream and provision." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (on hearing this) said: "You very nearly took al-Walid as an object of worship." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) named him Abdullah.
