Sayyiduna Qurrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: During the days of al-Qadisiyyah, Sayyiduna al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him) sent (a message) to the commander of Persia and said: "Send ten men with me." Then he fastened his clothes tightly, took a shield with him, and set off until they reached him. He said to the people: "Throw down a burnus (cloak) for me," and he sat on it. That non-Arab (commander) said: "O people of the Arabs! I know what has driven you to come to us. You are a people who do not find enough food in your land to be satisfied, so take (this); we will give you as much food as you need, for we are a Magian people and we dislike killing you; (your corpses) would defile our land for us." Sayyiduna al-Mughirah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By Allah! It is not this (food) that has brought us here. Rather, we were a people who worshipped stones and idols; whenever we saw a stone better than the one before, we would throw the first away and take the other. We did not know any Lord, until Allah sent to us a Messenger from among ourselves, who called us to Islam, and we followed him, and he commanded us to fight our enemy - those who have abandoned Islam. We have not come for food; rather, we have come to kill your fighters and to take your offspring captive. As for the food you mentioned, we truly did not find enough food to be satisfied, and sometimes we did not even find enough water to quench our thirst. Then we came to this land of yours and found plenty of food in it. So by Allah! We will not leave it until it becomes ours or yours." At that, the non-Arab said in Persian: "He speaks the truth, and tomorrow your eye will be put out at al-Qadisiyyah." And so the next day an arrow struck his eye and it was put out.
