Nu'jah bin Zayd al-Judhami narrated from his father: Sayyiduna Rifa'ah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) came as a delegate to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) had a document written for him, which read: "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. This is a document from Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, for Rifa'ah bin Zayd. I have sent him to his people as a whole and to whoever joins them, to invite them to Allah and to His Messenger. Whoever believes is in the party of Allah and the party of His Messenger, and whoever turns away has a guarantee of safety for two months." When he reached his people, they accepted his call. Then he set out until he encamped at al-Harrah - Harrat al-Rajla'. Then, shortly afterwards, Sayyiduna Dihyah al-Kalbi (may Allah be pleased with him) came back from Banu Qurayzah, where the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had sent him, until, when he reached one of their valleys called Shinan - and he had his trade goods with him - al-Hunayd bin Uways and his father, Uways al-Duba'i - who were from a branch of Judham - attacked him and plundered everything he had. Then some people from Rifa'ah's tribe went out to help him, and among those who came forward was al-Nu'man bin Abi Ji'al, until they caught up with them and fighting took place. Qurrah bin Ashqar al-Dala'i struck al-Nu'man bin Abi Ji'al with a stone, which hit his heel and bloodied it, and he said: I am the son of Uthalah. Then al-Nu'man bin Abi Ji'al shot him with an arrow, which hit his knee, and he said: I am the son of Iqalah. Hassan bin Millah al-Dabbi had earlier been in the company of Sayyiduna Dihyah al-Kalbi (may Allah be pleased with him), who had taught him Umm al-Kitab (Surah al-Fatihah). So they recovered his goods and returned them to Dihyah. Then Dihyah (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him of what had happened, and demanded from him retribution for the blood of al-Hunayd and his father Uways; and this was what stirred up the tribes of Zayd and Judham. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Zayd bin Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him) and dispatched an army with him. Meanwhile, Ghatafan, Judham and Wa'il, and those who were from Salaman and Sa'd bin Hudhayl, had already moved off (from their places) when Rifa'ah came to them with the letter of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) encamped at al-Harrah - Harrat al-Rajla' - while Rifa'ah was at Kura' al-Ghamim, and with him was a horseman from Banu al-Dubayb, and the rest of Banu al-Dubayb were in the valley of Madariq on the side of al-Harrah.
