Khalid bin Ma'dan (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Sayyiduna al-Miqdam bin Ma'di Karib (may Allah be pleased with him) and Amr bin al-Aswad - a man from Banu Asad, from the people of Qinnasrin, and one of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) - went as a delegation to Mu'awiyah (may Allah have mercy on him). Mu'awiyah said to al-Miqdam: "Do you not know that al-Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) has passed away?" Al-Miqdam recited 'Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un (We belong to Allah and to Him we return).' Mu'awiyah said to him: "Do you consider it a calamity?" He said: "Why should I not consider it a calamity, when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) placed him in his lap and said: 'This one is from me, and Husayn is from Ali.'" Then Mu'awiyah said to the Asadi: "What do you say?" He said: "An ember that Allah has extinguished." Sayyiduna al-Miqdam (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "As for me, I will not leave today until I have angered you and made you hear what you dislike." Then he said: "If I speak the truth, confirm it, and if I lie, call me a liar." He said: "I will do so." He said: "I adjure you by Allah, did you hear the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) 'forbidding the wearing of gold'?" He said: "Yes." Al-Miqdam said: "And I adjure you by Allah, do you know 'that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade the wearing of silk'?" He said: "Yes." Al-Miqdam said: "I adjure you by Allah, do you know 'that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade the skins of predatory animals and riding upon them'?" He said: "Yes." Al-Miqdam said: "By Allah, I have seen all of this in your own house, O Mu'awiyah." Mu'awiyah said: "I knew that I would not escape it today, O Miqdam." Khalid said: Mu'awiyah ordered wealth to be given to him but did not order anything for his companion, and he fixed a stipend for his son. He said: Sayyiduna al-Miqdam (may Allah be pleased with him) distributed that wealth among his companions and gave the Asadi nothing of what he had received. This reached Mu'awiyah, and he said: "As for al-Miqdam, he is a generous man, open-handed; and as for the Asadi, he is a man good at holding on to wealth for himself."
