Jubayr bin Nufayr (may Allah have mercy on him) said: One day we were sitting with Sayyiduna al-Miqdad bin al-Aswad (may Allah be pleased with him) when a man passed by him, and I listened, and he said: "Blessed are these two eyes which saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). By Allah, I wish we had seen what you saw and been present where you were present." Al-Miqdad turned to him and said: "What makes a man wish to have been present at a scene which Allah kept hidden from him, not knowing, had he been present at it, how he would have been in it? By Allah, people came into the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) whom Allah threw on their faces into Hell; they did not respond to him (peace and blessings be upon him) nor believe him. Will Allah not deprive any of you? Do you not recognise the blessings of your Lord, while you are believers in what your Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) brought? You have been spared the trial through others. By Allah, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sent in the harshest condition in which any prophet among the prophets was ever sent, in a period of interruption (between prophets) and of ignorance (jahiliyyah), when people did not think any religion better than the worship of idols. He (peace and blessings be upon him) brought a Criterion (Furqan) which distinguished between truth and falsehood, and separated a father from his child, to the point that a man would see his father, his child or his brother as a disbeliever, while Allah had opened the lock of his own heart with faith, and he would know that whoever enters the Fire is ruined. His eye would not be gladdened while he knew that his close relative was in the Fire. And this is the state about which Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, said: 'Our Lord, grant us from our wives and our offspring the coolness of our eyes' [Al-Furqan: 74]."
