حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَضْرَمِيُّ، ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ الْحَجَّاجِ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ، ثنا أَبِي قَالَا: ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ وَائِلِ بْنِ دَاوُدَ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا الْمِقْدَادُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ، ثنا أَسَدُ بْنُ مُوسَى، ثنا مَرْوَانُ بْنُ مُعَاوِيَةَ، ثنا وَائِلُ بْنُ دَاوُدَ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ الْبَهِيُّ، مَوْلَى مُصْعَبِ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ قَالَ: وَقَفَ رَكْبٌ عَلَى عُثْمَانَ فَأَثْنَوْا عَلَيْهِ وَمَدَحُوهُ - وَثَمَّ الْمِقْدَادُ بْنُ الْأَسْوَدِ - فَأَخَذَ قَبْضَةً مِنَ الْأَرْضِ فَحَثَا فِي وُجُوهِهِمُ التُّرَابَ، وَقَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: «إِذَا رَأَيْتُمُ الْمَدَّاحِينَ فَاحْثُوا فِي وُجُوهِهِمُ التُّرَابَ»
Abdullah al-Bahi, the freed slave (mawla) of Mus'ab bin al-Zubayr (may Allah have mercy on him), said: Some riders stopped at Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), and they extolled and praised him - and Sayyiduna Miqdad bin al-Aswad (may Allah be pleased with him) was present there. He took a handful of dust from the ground and threw it in their faces, and said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "When you see the flatterers, throw dust in their faces."
