حَدَّثَنَا الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ الْأَسْفَاطِيُّ، ثنا مُوسَى بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، ثنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ، عَنْ أَبِي عُثْمَانَ، عَنْ أَبِي مُوسَى، أَنَّ عَلِيًّا رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: «أَلَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِخَيْرِ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ بَعْدَ نَبِيِّهَا صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ؟» قَالُوا: بَلَى. قَالَ: «أَبُو بَكْرٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ» ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: «أَلَا أُخْبِرُكُمْ بِخَيْرِ هَذِهِ الْأُمَّةِ بَعْدَ أَبِي بَكْرٍ؟» قَالُوا: بَلَى. قَالَ: «عُمَرُ وَلَوْ شِئْتُ لَأَخْبَرْتُكُمْ بِالثَّالِثِ»
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) that Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Shall I not tell you about the best person of this Ummah after its Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?" The people said: "Indeed." He said: "Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him)." Then he said: "Shall I not tell you about the best person of this Ummah after Abu Bakr?" The people said: "Indeed." He said: "Umar. And had I wished, I would have told you about the third as well."
