Sahl bin Mu'adh bin Anas (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father, Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered his Companions to go out on a military expedition, and he saw a man staying behind. The man said: I thought I would pray Zuhr with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), then greet him and bid him farewell, so that he would make a supplication for me that would give me precedence on the Day of Resurrection. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had prayed, the man came before him (peace and blessings be upon him), greeting him. the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Do you know by how much your companions have gone ahead of you?" He said: Yes, they have got ahead of me by setting out early yesterday and today. the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By the One in whose hand is my soul, they have gone ahead of you in virtue by more than the distance between the two easts and the two wests."
