Al-Hajjaj bin Uthman al-Saksaki (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) standing in prayer. He (peace and blessings be upon him) kept standing until morning came. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) made a prostration so long that I thought his soul had been taken in it. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) looked at me and said: "O Mu'adh! Did you see?" I said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah! I saw that you made such a prostration that I thought your soul had been taken. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you know why that was?" I said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I prayed as much as my Lord had written for me, and my Lord came to me and said: O Muhammad! What shall I do with your Ummah? I said: O my Lord! You know best. He repeated this to me three or four times, then at the end He said to me: What shall I do with your Ummah? I said: O my Lord! You know best. He said: I will not grieve you concerning your Ummah. So I prostrated to my Lord, and your Lord is Appreciative and loves those who are grateful."
