Abu Amir al-Hawzani Abdullah bin Luhayy (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates: We performed Hajj with Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah bin Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him). When we arrived in Makkah, he was told about a storyteller who told stories to the people of Makkah; he was a freed slave of Banu Makhzum. Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) sent for him and said: Were you ordered to tell these stories? He said: No. He said: Then what led you to tell stories without permission? He said: We spread knowledge that Allah has taught us. Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Had I warned you before this time of mine, I would have cut off a part of you. Then he stood and led the Zuhr prayer in Makkah, and then said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The People of the Book split into seventy-two (72) sects, and this Ummah will split into seventy-three (73) sects," meaning on the basis of desires, "and all of them will be in Hell except one, and that is the Jama'ah." And he said: "Indeed, there will emerge from my Ummah people in whom desires will run as rabies runs through a dog, until no vein or joint remains that it has not entered." By Allah, O people of the Arabs! If you do not uphold what Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) brought, then people other than you are even more certain not to uphold it.
