حَدَّثَنَا عُمَارَةُ بْنُ وَثِيمَةَ الْمِصْرِيُّ، ثنا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ زِبْرِيقٍ، ثنا عَمْرُو بْنُ الْحَارِثِ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ سَالِمٍ، عَنِ الزُّبَيْدِيِّ، ثنا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ جَابِرٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ هُبَيْرَةَ، أَنَّهُ كَانَ يُكَلِّمُ مُعَاوِيَةَ وَأَذَّنَ الْمُؤَذِّنُ فَأَمَرَهُ أَنْ يُنْصِتَ، ثُمَّ كَبَّرَ كَمَا كَبَّرَ، ثُمَّ قَالَ الْمُؤَذِّنُ: أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ، فَقَالَ: وَنَحْنُ نَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ، قَالَ الْمُؤَذِّنُ: أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللهِ، فَقَالَ: وَنَحْنُ نَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللهِ، قَالَ ابْنُ هُبَيْرَةَ: فَقُلْتُ لَهُ: أَشَيْءٌ رَأَيْتَهُ أَمْ سَمِعْتَهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ؟، فَقَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَبَّرَ حِينَ سَمِعَ الْمُؤَذِّنَ، فَإِذَا قَالَ: أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ، قَالَ: «وَأَنَا أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ» ، وَإِذَا قَالَ: أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللهِ قَالَ: «وَأَنَا أَشْهَدُ أَنِّي رَسُولُ اللهِ»
It is narrated from Ibn Hubayrah (may Allah have mercy on him) that he was speaking with Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) when the muezzin called the adhan, so he told him to keep silent. Then he said the takbir just as the muezzin said the takbir. Then the muezzin said: I bear witness that there is no true god except Allah, and he said: And we too bear witness that there is no true god except Allah. The muezzin said: I bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah, and he said: And we too bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah. Ibn Hubayrah says: I said to him: Is this something you saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) do, or heard from him (peace and blessings be upon him)? He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say the takbir when he heard the muezzin's adhan. Then when the muezzin said: I bear witness that there is no true god except Allah, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And I too bear witness that there is no true god except Allah." And when the muezzin said: I bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And I too bear witness that I am the Messenger of Allah."
