Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 16888 — Mu'awiyah bin Abi Sufyan said

حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْوَهَّابِ بْنِ نَجْدَةَ، وَأَبُو زَيْدٍ الْحَوْطَيَانِ قَالَا: ثنا أَبُو الْمُغِيرَةِ، ثنا سَعِيدُ بْنُ بَشِيرٍ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي مَيْمُونَةَ، قَالَ: قَالَ مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ: «إِنَّ أَهْلَ مَكَّةَ أَخْرَجُوا رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَلَا تَكُونُ فِيهِمُ الْخِلَافَةُ، وَإِنَّ أَهْلَ الْمَدِينَةِ قَتَلُوا عُثْمَانَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ فَلَا تَعُودُ الْخِلَافَةُ فِيهِمْ أَبَدًا»
Abu Maymunah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Mu'awiyah bin Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The people of Makkah drove out the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so the caliphate will not be among them; and the people of Madinah killed Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), so the caliphate will never return to them."
