Abu Atiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him), a freed slave from among us (our tribe), said: Sayyiduna Malik bin al-Huwayrith (may Allah be pleased with him) used to come to us at our place of prayer. One day the prayer was called, and we said to him: Go forward and lead the prayer. He said to us: Put forward a man from among you to lead you in prayer, and I will tell you why I do not lead you in prayer: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever visits a people should not lead them in prayer; rather, a man from among them should lead them."
