Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 166 — When Abd al-Rahman bin Muljam struck Ali

Awanah bin al-Hakam said: When Abd al-Rahman bin Muljam struck Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) with a sword and he was carried to his house, the visitors came to him. He praised and glorified Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, and invoked blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), then said: "Every person must meet the very thing he flees from. Death is the driver of the soul, and fleeing from its afflictions (is of no avail). How many days have I spent searching to learn the hidden secret of this matter, but Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, willed nothing but to keep it concealed. Alas, this is a knowledge kept in store. As for my counsel to you, it is this: concerning Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, do not associate anything with Him; and concerning Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), do not neglect his Sunnah. Keep these two pillars standing, and no blame will be upon you as long as you do not scatter. Every person will bear the burden of his own effort, and (the burden) has been lightened for the ignorant, by virtue of a Merciful Lord, an upright religion and a knowledgeable leader. We were amid winds and the gusts of branches, and under the shade of a cloud whose centre dispersed, so that the cloud sets down a helpless traveller. It (my body) remained in your neighbourhood for some days in succession, then it fell; so after it you will find an empty, still body, silent after movement, quiet after speech. That is a greater admonition for those who take heed than the words of an eloquent orator. The one who calls you is a caller lying in wait for the meeting tomorrow. Tomorrow you will see the state of my days, and my secrets will be laid bare. Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, will not show me favour except that I draw near to Him through piety, so that He forgives some shortcoming of mine. Peace be upon you until the Day of Meeting. If I live, then I am the one with authority over my own blood; and if I perish, then perishing is my appointed meeting place. Forgiving is a means of nearness for me and a good deed for you, so forgive. May Allah forgive us and you: 'Do you not love that Allah should forgive you? And Allah is Forgiving, Merciful' [Al-Nur: 22]." Then he said:
"Live as long as you wish; your final abode is death; there is no moving away from it, nor any escape.
The prosperity and splendour of the house were still standing when the prosperity departed and the house collapsed.
Would that I knew what is intended for us; and saying 'would that' brings us no benefit."
