Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 16580 — the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said on the day

حَدَّثَنَا مُعَاذُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، ثنا مُسَدَّدٌ، ثنا خَالِدٌ، ثنا حُصَيْنٌ، عَنْ عَامِرٍ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ صَيْفِيٍّ الْأَنْصَارِيِّ: أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ يَوْمَ عَاشُورَاءَ: «مَنْ كَانَ مِنْكُمْ طَعِمَ فَلْيُمْسِكْ بَقِيَّةَ يَوْمِهِ، وَمَنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ طَعِمَ فَلْيَصُمْ» ، وَأَرْسَلَ إِلَى أَهْلِ الْعَرُوضِ فَأَمَرَهُمْ بِصَوْمِهِ
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Muhammad bin Sayfi al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said on the day of Ashura: "Whoever among you has eaten something, let him abstain for the rest of the day; and whoever has not eaten, let him fast." And he (peace and blessings be upon him) also sent word to the people of the countryside and ordered them to fast it.
