Yazid bin Abi Habib (may Allah have mercy on him) was narrating to Muhammad bin Abi Ziyad al-Thaqafi that Sayyiduna Qays bin Kharashah (may Allah be pleased with him) and Ka'b al-Kitabayn were travelling together, until, when the two of them reached Siffin, Ka'b stood still for a while and said: La ilaha illallah! In this tract of land so much of the blood of the Muslims will be shed as will not be shed in any other tract of the earth. At this Qays (may Allah be pleased with him) became angry, then said: O Abu Ishaq, what do you know? Is this not part of the Unseen, the knowledge of which Allah has kept for Himself? Ka'b said: There is nothing on the earth but it is written in the Torah which Allah revealed to Musa (peace be upon him): what will happen to it and what will come forth from it until the Day of Resurrection. Muhammad bin Yazid asked: Who is Qays bin Kharashah? He said: He is a man of Qays (the tribe); do you not know him, when he is a man from your own land? He said: By Allah, I do not know him. He said: Sayyiduna Qays bin Kharashah (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: I pledge allegiance to you on what has come down to you from Allah, and on this, that I will speak the truth. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Qays, if your life is prolonged, there will come over you after me rulers with whom you will not be able to speak the truth." Qays (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah, whatever I pledge allegiance to you on, I will fulfil it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then nothing will harm you." The narrator said: So Qays used to find fault with Ziyad and his son Ubaydullah bin Ziyad. (Ziyad) sent for him and had it said to him: Are you the one who fabricates lies against Allah and His Messenger? He said: No; but if you wish, I will tell you who fabricates lies against Allah and His Messenger: the one who abandons acting upon the Book of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, and the Sunnah of His Messenger.
