Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Farwah bin Amir al-Judhami (may Allah be pleased with him) sent word to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) of his acceptance of Islam and gifted him a white mule. Farwah was governor, under Caesar, the king of Rome, over the Arabs within his sphere, and his seat was Amman and its surroundings. When the Romans learned of this matter of his, they imprisoned him, and in his prison he composed these verses:
In a late hour of the night the phantom of Sulayma came to my companions, while the Romans were (on guard) between the door and al-Qarawan.
That phantom held me back, and what I see has grieved me; so I wished to sleep, but it made me weep.
O Salma, do not put kohl in your eyes after me, and do not submit to anyone who comes.
O Abu Kubayshah, you know that among the noble I am such that my tongue cannot be counted.
If I perish, you will lose your brother; and if I live, you will recognise my worth and standing.
And you have recognised every quality of this young man gathered in his judgement, his bravery and his eloquence.
The narrator said: When the Romans resolved to crucify him, they crucified him at a watering place in Palestine called Afra. When he was raised upon the wood, he said:
Behold! Has the news reached Salma that her husband is at the water of Afra, upon one of the mounts?
Upon a wood whose root no male palm pollinated, and whose branches were trimmed with sickles.
And he also said: Convey to the leaders of the Muslims that I have surrendered my bones and my fingers to my Lord.
