Sayyiduna al-Fadl bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to me, so I went out to him and found that he had a fever and had bound a bandage around his head. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Fadl! Take my hand." I took his hand until he reached the pulpit, and he sat on it, then said: "Call out to the people." I called out to the people, and people gathered around him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) praised Allah and extolled Him, then said: "O people! Listen, certain rights of some of you have become due upon me. So whoever's back I have struck with a whip, here is my back present; let him take retribution from me. Listen, and whoever's honour I have said something against, here is my honour present; let him take retribution from me. Listen, let no man say: 'I fear rancour from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).' Listen, rancour is not in my nature nor in my temperament. Listen, the most beloved of you to me is the one who takes his right, if he has any, or forgives me, so that I may meet Allah with a contented heart. Listen, I do not consider this (saying it once) sufficient, until I have stood before you several times." Then he came down and led the Zuhr prayer, then he returned to the pulpit and repeated what he had said about rancour and other matters. Then he said: "O people! Whoever has something (belonging to another) with him, let him return it, and let him not say that he will be disgraced in this world, for the disgrace of this world is easier than the disgrace of the Hereafter." At this a man stood up and said: O Messenger of Allah! You owe me three dirhams. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "We neither call a claimant a liar nor make him swear an oath; so how did they come to be owed by me?" He said: Do you remember the day a poor man passed by you, and you ordered me to give it (the money) to him? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Fadl! Give it to him." Then another man stood up and said: I have three dirhams which I stole from (the wealth meant for) the path of Allah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why did you steal them?" He said: I was in need of them. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Fadl! Take them." Then he said: "O people! Whoever fears something about himself, let him stand, and I will supplicate for him." A man stood up and said: O Messenger of Allah! I am a liar, and I am a hypocrite, and I sleep a great deal. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Allah, grant him truthfulness and faith, and remove sleep from him when he intends (worship)." Then another man stood up and said: O Messenger of Allah! I am a liar, and I am a hypocrite, and there is no sin that I have not committed. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: O man! You have disgraced yourself. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Umar! Leave it; the disgrace of this world is easier than the disgrace of the Hereafter." Then he said: "O Allah, grant him truthfulness and faith, and turn his affair towards good." Then Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said something to them, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Umar is with me and I am with Umar, and after me the truth is wherever Umar is."
