حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عِرْقٍ الْحِمْصِيُّ، ثنا عَمْرُو بْنُ عُثْمَانَ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حِمْيَرٍ، ثنا فَضَالَةُ بْنُ شَرِيكٍ، عَنْ خَالِدِ بْنِ مَعْدَانَ، عَنِ الْعِرْبَاضِ بْنِ سَارِيَةَ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُ قَامَ يَوْمًا فِي النَّاسِ فَقَالَ: «أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ، تُوشِكُونَ أَنْ تَكُونُوا مُجَنَّدَةً، جُنْدٌ بِالشَّامِ، وَجُنْدٌ بِالْعِرَاقِ، وَجُنْدٌ بِالْيَمَنِ» فَقَالَ ابْنُ حَوَالَةَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، إِنْ أَدْرَكَنِي ذَلِكَ الزَّمَانُ فَاخْتَرْ لِي، قَالَ: «إِنِّي أَخْتَارُ لَكَ الشَّامَ، فَإِنَّهُ خِيْرَةُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ وَصَفْوَةُ اللهِ مِنْ بِلَادِهِ، يَجْتَبِي إِلَيْهَا صَفْوَتَهُ مِنْ خَلْقِهِ، فَمَنْ أَبَى فَلْيَلْحَقْ بِيَمَنِهِ، وَلْيَسْقِ مِنْ غُدُرِهِ، فَإِنَّ اللهَ قَدْ كَفَلَ لِي بِالشَّامِ وَأَهْلِهِ»
It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Irbad bin Sariyah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood among the people one day and said: "O people, soon you will be divided into armies: an army in Syria (al-Sham), an army in Iraq and an army in Yemen." At this Sayyiduna Ibn Hawalah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah, if I live to see that time, then choose (one of them) for me." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I choose Syria for you, for among the lands of Allah it is the best and choicest part for the Muslims; Allah gathers there His chosen servants from among His creation. Whoever refuses, let him join his Yemen and drink from his own (water) pools, for Allah has guaranteed to me Syria and its people."
