It is narrated from Sayyiduna Imran bin Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) that he was present with Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) during the days of the Battle of Tabuk, in the Army of Hardship (Jaysh al-Usrah). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered charity, strength and following one another's example. The Christians of the Arabs had written to Heraclius: "This man who came out claiming prophethood has perished, and they have been struck by years of drought so that their wealth has been destroyed; so if you wish to (save) your religion, now is the time." So Heraclius sent one of their great chiefs, a man called al-Dannad, and dispatched forty thousand (troops) with him. When this reached the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) wrote to the Arabs, and every day he would sit on the pulpit, supplicate to Allah and say: "O Allah, if this band perishes, You will not be worshipped on the earth." The people did not have the strength to do anything. Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) had prepared a caravan for Syria with which he intended to bring back provisions, so he said: "O Messenger of Allah, here are two hundred camels with their saddles and saddle-cloths, and two hundred uqiyah." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) praised Allah, and the people said the takbir. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood in another place and ordered charity, so Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: "O Messenger of Allah, here are another two hundred camels and two hundred uqiyah." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said "Allahu Akbar", and the people also said "Allahu Akbar". Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) brought the camels and brought the wealth, and poured it out before him (peace and blessings be upon him), and I heard him (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whatever Uthman does after today will not harm him."
