Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 15217 — We halted at a place with the Messenger

Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik al-Ashja'i (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We halted at a place with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). At night I woke up and saw that nothing in the army stood higher than the back of a camel saddle; every person and his camel were pressed against the ground. I got up and passed among the people until I reached the sleeping place of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and saw that he (peace and blessings be upon him) was not there. I put my hands on the bedding and it was cold. I got up and went out passing among the people, saying: Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un (We belong to Allah and to Him we return), the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has been taken away (by someone)! Until I went out of the whole army, and then I saw a dark shape. I went towards it, threw a stone, then went on towards that dark shape, and saw that it was Mu'adh bin Jabal and Abu Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with them both). In front of us was a sound like the rumbling of a millstone, and like the sound of wood as the winds rustle it. We said to one another: O people! Stay where you are until you come to your senses or the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) comes to you. We stayed for as long as Allah willed, then he (peace and blessings be upon him) called out: "Are Mu'adh bin Jabal, Abu Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah and Awf bin Malik here?" We said: Yes. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) came towards us until we were with him (peace and blessings be upon him). We did not ask him (peace and blessings be upon him) anything and he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not tell us anything until he (peace and blessings be upon him) sat on his bed. Then he said: "Do you know what my Lord gave me the choice of tonight?" We said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He gave me the choice between half of my Ummah entering Paradise, or being granted intercession, and I chose intercession." We said: O Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah to make us among its people. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is for every Muslim."
