Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: One night I stood with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) first used the tooth-stick (miswak), then performed ablution (wudu), then stood and began to pray, and I stood with him (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) began reciting from Surah al-Baqarah; he did not pass a verse of mercy without stopping and asking, and he did not pass a verse of punishment without stopping and seeking refuge. Then he bowed and remained in bowing as long as he had remained standing, saying in his bowing: "Subhana dhi al-jabaruti wa al-malakuti wa al-kibriya'i wa al-'azamah (Glory be to the Possessor of might, dominion, grandeur and majesty)." Then he recited Surah Al Imran, then one surah after another, doing the same.
