Sayyiduna Abu Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Jibril (peace be upon him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: Stand and pray. That was at the sun's decline, when the sun had declined. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood and prayed four rak'ahs of Zuhr. Then he came when the shadow of everything had become equal to it and said: Stand and pray. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed four rak'ahs of Asr. Then he came when the sun set and said: Stand and pray. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed three rak'ahs of Maghrib. Then he came when the twilight had disappeared and said: Stand and pray. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed four rak'ahs of Isha. Then he came when the dawn broke and said: Stand and pray. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed two rak'ahs of Fajr. Then the next day he came at the time of Zuhr, when the shadow of everything had become equal to it, and said: Stand and pray. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed four rak'ahs of Zuhr. Then he came when the shadow of everything had become twice its length and said: Stand and pray. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed four rak'ahs of Asr. Then he came at the same first time, when the sun set, and said: Stand and pray. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed three rak'ahs of Maghrib. Then he came after the twilight had disappeared and darkness had fallen and said: Stand and pray. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed four rak'ahs of Isha. Then he came after the dawn had risen and the light had spread and said: Stand and pray. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed two rak'ahs of Fajr. Then Jibril (peace be upon him) said: "The prayer time is between these two."
