Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 14792 — the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said

حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ، ثَنَا أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ ثَنَا سُفْيَانَ، عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ أَبِي ثَابِتٍ، عَنِ الْقَاسِمِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي مَسْعُودٍ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِقُرَيْشٍ: «لَا يَزَالُ هَذَا الْأَمْرُ فِيكُمْ وَأَنْتُمْ وُلَاتُهُ مَا لَمْ تُحْدِثُوا، فَإِذَا فَعَلْتُمْ ذَلِكَ سَلَّطَ اللهُ عَلَيْكُمْ شِرَارَ خَلْقِهِ فَالْتَحَوْكُمْ كَمَا يُلْتَحَى الْقَضِيبُ»
Sayyiduna Abu Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Quraysh: "This matter of the caliphate will remain among you, and you will remain its rulers, as long as you do not introduce innovations. When you do that, Allah will set over you the worst of His creation, who will strip you as a stick is stripped of its bark."
