Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 14682 — the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said

حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ صَدَقَةَ الْبَغْدَادِيُّ، ثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ خَالِدِ بْنِ خَلِيٍّ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، ثَنَا سَلَمَةُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ الْعَوْصِيُّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ حُمَيْدٍ الرُّؤَاسِيِّ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ رَجَاءٍ، عَنْ أَوْسِ بْنِ ضَمْعَجٍ، عَنْ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَمْرٍو، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «يَؤُمُّ الْقَوْمَ أَقْرَؤُهُمْ لِكِتَابِ اللهِ، فَإِنْ كَانُوا فِي الْقِرَاءَةِ سَوَاءً فَأَعْلَمُهُمْ بِالسُّنَّةِ، فَإِنْ كَانُوا فِي عِلْمِ السُّنَّةِ سَوَاءً فَأَقْدَمُهُمْ هِجْرَةً، فَإِنْ كَانُوا فِي الْهِجْرَةِ سَوَاءً فَأَقْدَمُهُمْ سِنًّا، وَلَا تَؤُمَّ أَحَدًا فِي إِمْرَتِهِ، وَلَا تَجْلِسْ عَلَى تَكْرِمَتِهِ فِي بَيْتِهِ إِلَّا أَنْ يَأْذَنَ لَكَ»
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amr (Abu Mas'ud) (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The people should be led in prayer by their best reciter of the Book of Allah. If they are equal in recitation, then the one most knowledgeable of the Sunnah. If they are equal in knowledge of the Sunnah, then the one who emigrated first. If they are equal in emigration, then the one oldest in age. Do not lead a man in prayer within the area of his command, and do not sit in his place of honour in his house except with his permission."
