Sayyiduna Isam al-Muzani (may Allah be pleased with him) - who was a Companion - said: Whenever the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent out an army or a detachment, he would say to them: "If you see a mosque or hear the call to prayer (adhan), do not kill anyone." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent us out in a detachment and gave us this same order. We were travelling in the land of Tihamah when we came upon a man who was driving along some women in their howdahs. We invited him to Islam and asked: Are you a Muslim? He said: What is Islam? We told him, and he was not acquainted with it at all. He said: If I do not do so, what will you do? We said: We will kill you. He said: Will you give me respite until I reach these women? We said: Yes, and we will catch you. He went, and there was a woman in her howdah. He said to her: O Hubaysh! Be safe before life comes to an end (meaning farewell). She said: (May you too) be safe ten or nine times in succession. Then he recited these verses:
Do you remember when I sought you and found you at Hilyah, or caught up with you at al-Khawaniq?
It is not right that a lover should go unrewarded who has endured the night journeys and the heat of midday
I have no fault; I only said, when our families were together: Reward my love before some hardship comes
Reward my love before separation draws far, and the commander goes far off, seeking parting
Then he came to us and said: Do what you will. We brought him forward and struck off his head. The other woman came down from her howdah and fell upon him until she died.
