It is narrated from Sayyiduna Atiyyah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he was among those who spoke to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on the day of the captives of Hawazin. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is your clan and your origin, and all of these are wet nurses." He also said: "We kept you in reserve for this very day, and these are your mothers, your sisters and your maternal aunts." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) spoke to his Companions, and they returned their captives to them, except for two men. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go and give the two of them the choice." One of them said: I give him up, and the other said: I will not give him up. When he turned to leave, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He has done well by his share." (The narrator said:) He (peace and blessings be upon him) would pass by a virgin girl or a boy and leave them, until he passed by an old woman and said: "I will take this one, for she is the mother of a tribe, and they will ransom her from me with whatever they are able to." At this Atiyyah proclaimed the takbir and said: O Messenger of Allah! Take her; her mouth is not lovely, nor is her bosom firm, nor will anyone want her. She is an old woman, O Messenger of Allah, a helpless captive who has no one. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw that no one came forward (to ransom) her, he (peace and blessings be upon him) let her go.
