Imam Urwah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates: When the people set out for Hajj in the year 9 AH, Urwah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) as a Muslim. Then he asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for permission to return to his people. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I fear that they will kill you." He said: "If they found me asleep, they would not even wake me." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him permission, and he returned to his people as a Muslim. He prepared an evening meal, and the people of Thaqif came to greet him, so he invited them to Islam. They accused him, angered him and made him hear things he had never imagined. Then they left him, until, when they had eaten their pre-dawn meal and dawn broke, he stood on an upper room of his house, gave the call to prayer (adhan) and recited the testimony of faith (tashahhud). Then a man from Thaqif shot him with an arrow and killed him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The example of Urwah is like the example of the man of Ya-Sin, who called his people to Allah and they killed him."
