Khalifah bin Abdah bin Jarwal said: I asked Muhammad bin Adi bin Rabi'ah bin Suwa'ah bin Jusham: How did your father come to name you Muhammad in the days of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah)? He said: Listen! I asked my father the same thing you have asked me, and he said: I set out as the fourth of four men from Banu Tamim - I was one of them, along with Sufyan bin Mujashi' bin Darim, Usamah bin Malik bin Jundub bin al-Anbar, and Yazid bin Rabi'ah bin Kinabiyah bin Hurqus bin Mazin - (heading) to Yazid bin Jafnah bin Malik bin Ghassan in Syria. When we reached Syria, we stopped at a pool beside which were the trees of a dayrani - that is, a monk of a hermitage. We said: Why not bathe in this water, apply oil and put on our (good) clothes, and then go to our host? Meanwhile the monk looked down at us from above and said: This language is not the language of the people of this land. We said: Yes, we are people of Mudar. He said: Which Mudar? We said: Khindif. He said: Listen! Soon a prophet will be sent from among you, so hasten and take your share of him and you will be rightly guided, for he is the Seal of the Prophets. We said: What is his name? He said: Muhammad. When we returned from Ibn Jafnah, a boy was born to each one of us, and each named him Muhammad. Al-Ala' said: Qays bin Asim (may Allah be pleased with him) said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Do you know who among the Arabs was the first to know about you before you were sent? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No." He said: Banu Tamim, and he related this story to him (peace and blessings be upon him).
