Ash'ath, the son of Sayyiduna Umayr al-Abdi (may Allah be pleased with him), narrates from his father: The delegation of Abd al-Qays came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When they were about to leave, (people) said: "You have memorised everything you heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so ask him about nabidh." So they came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, we live in a land whose climate is unhealthy, and nothing suits us there except drink." He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What is your drink?" They said: "Nabidh." He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "In what vessel do you drink it?" They said: "In a vessel hollowed out of a palm trunk (naqir)." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not drink from it." They said: "By Allah, our people will not agree to this." They went back, then came and asked again, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said the same thing. Then they came again, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not drink from it, or else one of you will receive such a blow that he will remain lame until the Day of Resurrection." They laughed, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Why are you laughing?" They said: "O Messenger of Allah, by the One who sent you with the truth, we drank from one such vessel of ours, and some of us fell upon one another, and in that fight so-and-so received such a blow that he became lame from it until the Day of Resurrection."
