Sayyiduna Amr bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) - who took part in the Battle of Badr with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) - narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him) to Bahrain, and he brought back its jizyah. It was the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) himself who had made peace with the people of Bahrain and had appointed Sayyiduna al-Ala' bin al-Hadrami (may Allah be pleased with him) as governor over them. So Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) came with wealth from Bahrain, and the Ansar heard of his arrival and came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at the Fajr prayer. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had led the prayer and turned to leave, the people turned towards him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled on seeing them and said: "I think you have heard that Abu Ubaydah has brought something?" They said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then rejoice, and hope for what will please you. By Allah, it is not poverty that I fear for you; rather, I fear for you that the world will be spread open for you just as it was spread open for those before you, and then you will compete for it just as they competed, and it will destroy you just as it destroyed them."
