ثوبان مولى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم " من غرائب مسند ثوبان رضي الله عنه يكنى أبا عبد الله ويقال: هو من اليمن، من حمير مولى آل رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، ويقال أصابه سبي فاشتراه رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، فأعتقه كان يسكن حمص، مات سنة أربع
Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him), client of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (among the rare reports of the Musnad of Thawban); his kunyah was Abu Abdullah; it is said he was from Himyar in Yemen, a client of the family of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and it is said he was taken captive and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) bought him and freed him; he lived in Hims and died in the year 54

حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَحْيَى بْنِ حَمْزَةَ، ثنا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ أَبُو النَّضْرِ، ثنا يَزِيدُ بْنُ رَبِيعَةَ، ثنا أَبُو الْأَشْعَثِ، عَنْ ثَوْبَانَ، قَالَ: اجْتَمَعَ أَرْبَعُونَ رَجُلًا مِنَ الصَّحَابَةِ، يَنْظُرُونَ فِي الْقَدَرِ، وَالْجَبْرِ فِيهِمْ، أَبُو بَكْرٍ، وَعُمَرُ رَضِي اللهُ عَنْهمَا، فَنَزَلَ الرُّوحُ الْأَمِينُ، جِبْرِيلُ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ: يَا مُحَمَّدُ اخْرُجْ عَلَى أُمَّتِكَ، فَقَدْ أَحْدَثُوا، فَخَرَجَ عَلَيْهِمْ فِي سَاعَةٍ، لَمْ يَكُنْ يَخْرُجُ عَلَيْهِمْ فِيهَا، فَأَنْكَرُوا ذَلِكَ مِنْهُ، وَخَرَجَ عَلَيْهِمْ مُلْتَمِعًا لَوْنُهُ، مُتَوَرِّدَةً وَجْنَتَاهُ، كَأَنَّمَا تَفَقَّأَ بِحَبِّ الرُّمَّانِ الْحَامِضِ، فَنَهَضُوا إِلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، حَاسِرِينَ أَذْرُعَهُمْ تَرْعَدُ أَكُفُّهُمْ، وأَذْرُعُهمْ، فَقَالُوا: تُبْنَا إِلَى اللهِ وَرَسُولِهِ، فَقَالَ: " أَوْلَى لَكُمْ إِنْ كِدْتُمْ لَتُوجِبُونَ، أَتَانِي الرُّوحُ الْأَمِينُ، فَقَالَ: اخْرُجْ عَلَى أُمَّتِكَ، يَا مُحَمَّدُ فَقَدْ أَحْدَثَتْ "
Sayyiduna Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Forty men from among the Companions gathered, deliberating over divine decree (qadar) and compulsion (jabr); among them were Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both). Then the Trustworthy Spirit, Jibril (peace be upon him), descended and said: O Muhammad, go out to your Ummah, for they have introduced something new (into the religion). He (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to them at a time at which he never used to come out, and they found that strange. He (peace and blessings be upon him) came out with his colour changed and his cheeks reddened, as if seeds of sour pomegranate had been burst upon them. So they rose towards the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), their sleeves rolled up, their hands and arms trembling, and they said: We repent to Allah and His Messenger. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Woe to you! You were close to making (punishment) binding upon yourselves. The Trustworthy Spirit came to me and said: O Muhammad, go out to your Ummah, for they have introduced something new (into the religion)."
