It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Rawahah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: Once I was passing through the mosque while the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting with some of his Companions, when suddenly the people called out: "O Abdullah bin Rawahah! O Abdullah bin Rawahah!" I thought that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was calling me, so I came, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Sit down, O Abdullah bin Rawahah. How do you compose poetry when you wish to compose it?" I said: "I reflect, then I compose." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then compose against the polytheists." I had prepared nothing beforehand, so I said (on the spot): "O you who are worth the price of cloaks, tell me: when were you ever chiefs, or when did the tribe of Mudar ever submit to you?" I sensed displeasure in the face of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), because I had called his people worth the price of cloaks. So I reflected and then said: "O noble house of Hashim, Allah has favoured you over all creation with a favour that has no equal. I perceived good in you through insight, an insight in which I differed from them in what they saw. Had you asked any of them, or sought their help in most of your affairs, they would neither have given you refuge nor helped you. So may Allah keep firm the good He has given you, as He kept Musa (peace be upon him) firm, and grant you help like the help that was given to them." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And you too, may Allah keep you firm, O Ibn Rawahah."
