Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 13932 — Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Unays relates

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Unays (may Allah be pleased with him) relates that one day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Who will deal with Khalid bin Nubayh al-Hudhali for me?" and at that time he (Khalid) was at Arafah. Abdullah said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, I am ready; describe him to me. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you see him, you will be afraid of him." I said: By the One who has honoured you, I have never been afraid of anything. So I set out until I met him in the mountains of Arafah before the sun set. When I met him, awe of him overcame me, and when awe of him overcame me, I understood what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had said. He asked: Who are you? I said: A traveller in need; is there a place to spend the night? He said: Yes, come with me. I followed behind him, then I prayed the Asr prayer as two light rak'ahs, then I went on, fearing that he might see me. Then I caught up with him and struck him with the sword, then I went into the mountain and hid, until, when the people had left, I came out and came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in Madinah and told him (peace and blessings be upon him) the news. Muhammad bin Ka'b said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave him a staff and said: "Lean on this until you meet me with it on the Day of Resurrection, for on that day those who lean on staffs will be few." Muhammad bin Ka'b said: When Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Unays (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away, he gave instructions about this staff, so it was placed on his stomach, he was shrouded with it, and he was buried with it.
