It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man of the Ansar disputed with Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) over the water channels of the Harrah with which they used to irrigate the date palms. The Ansari said: "Let the water flow," but al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) refused. The messenger of allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Zubayr, water (your land), then let it flow to your neighbour." At this the Ansari became angry and said: "O Messenger of Allah, is it because he is the son of your paternal aunt (that you ruled in his favour)?" On hearing this the colour of the blessed face of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) changed, and then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Zubayr, water (your land), then hold back the water until it returns to the (embankments around the) roots." Al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah, I think this verse was revealed about that: "But no, by your Lord, they will not believe until they make you judge in what is disputed between them" [Surah al-Nisa': 65] (to the end of) the verse.
