Ibn al-Mukhtar (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated from his father that he came to Makkah three days after Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) had been crucified or killed. His mother, Sayyidah Asma' bint Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with her), spoke to al-Hajjaj and said: "Is it not time for this rider to dismount?" He said: "That hypocrite?" She said: "No, by Allah, he was not a hypocrite; he used to fast much and pray much at night." He said: "Be quiet, for you are an old woman whose mind has failed." She said: "My mind has not failed since I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'From Thaqif there will emerge a liar and a destroyer.' As for the liar, we have already seen him," meaning al-Mukhtar, "and as for the destroyer, it is none other than you."
