حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو شُعَيْبٍ الْحَرَّانِيُّ، ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْبَابْلُتِّيُّ، ثنا الْأَوْزَاعِيُّ، حَدَّثَنِي الزُّهْرِيُّ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ، قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِعَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ: يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ إِنَّا نَدْخُلُ عَلَى الْأُمَرَاءِ فَيَقْضِي أَحَدُهُمْ بِالْقَضَاءِ جَوْرًا، فَنَقُولُ: وَفَّقَكَ اللهُ وَيَنْظُرُ إِلَى الرَّجُلِ مِنَّا فَيَثْنِي عَلَيْهِ، فَقَالَ: «أَمَّا نَحْنُ مَعْشَرَ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَكُنَّا نَعُدُّهُ نِفَاقًا فَمَا أَدْرِي مَا تَعُدُّونَهُ أَنْتُمْ؟»
Urwah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I said to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both): O Abu Abd al-Rahman! We go in to the rulers, and one of them gives an unjust judgement, and we say: May Allah grant you success; and he looks at one of us, and we praise him. He said: "We, the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), used to count that as hypocrisy; now I do not know what you count it as."
