Al-A'mash (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Salim bin Abdullah was sitting with al-Hajjaj, and al-Hajjaj said to him: Stand up and strike off this man's neck. Salim took the sword, took the man, and headed towards the door of the palace. His father, Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), saw him taking the man away and said: Do you think he will really do it? And he repeated this two or three times. When Salim went out with the man, he asked him: Did you pray the morning prayer? He said: Yes. Salim said: Then go wherever you wish. Then he came back and threw down the sword. Al-Hajjaj asked him: Did you strike off his neck? He said: No. He asked: Why not? He said: I heard my father say that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever prays the morning prayer is under the protection of Allah until evening." At this, Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "Shrewd indeed! We named you Salim only so that you would remain safe."
