Salim (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), that he heard him narrate this hadith about the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): When he (peace and blessings be upon him) appointed Sayyiduna Usamah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) as commander, news reached him (peace and blessings be upon him) that people had found fault with Usamah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) and criticised his command. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up among the people and said: "Listen! You find fault with Usamah and criticise his command, and before this you did the same with his father, although he was fit for command, and he was the most beloved of all people to me; and Usamah, after him, is the most beloved of people to me. So accept my counsel to treat him well, for he is among the best of you." Salim (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I never heard Abdullah (bin Umar) narrate this hadith without him always saying: Except Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her).
