Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) consulted the Muslims about what should be used to gather them for prayer. People said: A horn. He (peace and blessings be upon him) disliked it because of its resemblance to the Jews. Then the bell (naqus) was mentioned, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) disliked it too because of its resemblance to the Christians. So that very night Abdullah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him), a man from the Ansar, and Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) were both shown the call to prayer (adhan) in a dream. The Ansari Companion came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that same night, and "the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him), and he gave the adhan with it."
