Ibn Mawhab (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that he was with Mu'awiyah bin Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him) when Marwan came in to him and spoke to him about his needs. He said: O Commander of the Believers, fulfil my need, for by Allah my expenses are very great; I have become the father of ten, the brother of ten and the uncle of ten. When Marwan turned and left, while Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) was sitting with Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) on his throne, Mu'awiyah said: O Ibn Abbas, I adjure you by Allah, do you not know that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When Banu al-Hakam reach thirty men, they will take the signs of Allah as something passed around among themselves, His servants as slaves, and His Book as a means of deception; and when they reach four hundred and ninety-nine, their destruction will come faster than a fruit"? Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: O Allah, yes. Then Marwan mentioned some need of his, and Marwan bin Abd al-Malik returned to Mu'awiyah and spoke to him about it. When he turned and left, Mu'awiyah said: O Ibn Abbas, I adjure you by Allah, do you not know that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) also mentioned this? He said: The father of the four tyrants. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: O Allah, yes. It was for this reason that Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) claimed Ziyad (as his brother).
