Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated: The Angel of Death came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) during the illness in which he (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away. He asked permission (to enter) while the head of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was in the lap of Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh (Peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings). Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Go back, for we are occupied and cannot attend to you. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu al-Hasan, do you know who this is? This is the Angel of Death. (O Angel of Death,) enter with right guidance." When he entered, he said: Indeed, your Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, sends you greetings of peace. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Where is Jibril?" He said: He is not near me at this moment; he is coming. So the Angel of Death went out, and then Jibril (peace be upon him) descended upon him, and Jibril (peace be upon him), while standing at the door, said to him: O Angel of Death, what has brought you out? He said: Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) has asked for you. Then, when the two of them had sat down, Jibril (peace be upon him) said: Peace be upon you, O Abu al-Qasim; this is the (final) farewell from me and from you. It has reached me that the Angel of Death never greeted the people of any household with peace before him (peace and blessings be upon him), nor will he greet anyone after him (peace and blessings be upon him).
