Sa'id bin Jubayr (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated: I asked Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): Is there (any scope for) repentance for one who deliberately kills a believer? He said: "No." I said: Then what will be the meaning of this saying of Allah Almighty: "And those who do not call upon another god along with Allah, and do not kill the soul which Allah has forbidden except by right, and do not commit adultery; and whoever does that will meet the penalty. The punishment will be doubled for him on the Day of Resurrection, and he will abide therein forever, humiliated, except for one who repents, believes and does righteous deeds; for them Allah will replace their evil deeds with good deeds" [Al-Furqan: 69]? He said: "This is a Makkan verse; it was abrogated by a Madinan verse," (namely): "And whoever kills a believer deliberately, his recompense is Hell, abiding therein forever; Allah is angry with him, has cursed him and has prepared for him a great punishment" [Al-Nisa: 93].
