It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a group of people came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), bringing a woman with them, and they said: O Muhammad! What has been revealed to you concerning adultery? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go and bring me two men from the scholars of the Children of Israel." So they brought two men: one of them was an eloquent young man, and the other a young man whose eyebrows had drooped over his eyes, so that he would lift them with a band. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I adjure you both by Allah, tell us what Allah revealed to Musa (peace be upon him) concerning the adulterer." The two of them said: You have adjured us by something tremendous, and we tell you that Allah revealed to Musa (peace be upon him) concerning the adulterer stoning (rajm). But we were a people of young men, and our women were beautiful, and this (sin) became widespread among us, so we did not uphold it (stoning), and we turned to flogging and public shaming. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take your companion away, and when she has given birth to what is in her womb, stone her."
