It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man kept pursuing a debtor of his for ten dinars. He (the debtor) said: By Allah, I have nothing today with which to pay. He said: By Allah, I will not leave you until you pay or bring a guarantor who takes responsibility on your behalf. He said: By Allah, I have nothing to pay with, and I cannot find anyone who will stand guarantor for me. So he dragged him to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). (The debtor) said: O Messenger of Allah, this man has been pursuing me; I asked him for a respite of one month, but he refused unless I pay him or bring him a guarantor, and I said: By Allah, I cannot find a guarantor and I have nothing to pay with today. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Are you asking him for a respite of only one month?" He said: No. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then I will pay it on your behalf." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took responsibility for it. The man went and brought gold as he had promised him, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: "Where did you get this gold?" He said: From a mine. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then take it away; we have no need of it, and there is no good in it." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) paid that debt on his behalf.
